As part of a renovation project in 2008 for the Chaparral Ice Rink at Northcross Mall in Austin, TX, the first Munters FreeDry™ CW unit, an all electric, non-gas fired, desiccant dehumidification system was installed. Now, a year later, the rink has realized substantial energy savings with the more energy efficient technology.

The FreeDry™ technology combines advanced low temperature desiccant technology with refrigeration based cooling for unequaled moisture removal capacity and 60% lower annual operating costs. Utilizing the benefit of both technologies provides an extremely energy efficient arena dehumidification system which delivers properly conditioned dry air without the need for natural gas. Instead of using natural gas, this patented system uses the waste heat from the refrigeration plant to regenerate the desiccant wheel and to heat the arena. In addition, FreeDry™ is a more “green” solution for ice rinks, as it utilizes R-404A refrigerant.

The system has since provided unmatched dehumidification, maintaining indoor humidity levels even under the most extreme summer conditions, while ensuring superior ice quality and conditions for the facility.
