One of the worlds largest developers and manufacturers of tools, Sandvik, recently installed a Munters DryCool ERV system to control the climate at their newly acquired production facility in Rovereto, Italy.
The manufacturing facility produces over 1.2 million metal cutting and steel tools and employs approximately 130 people that work in three shifts, five days a week. The high-precision tools are then exported worldwide for metal cutting applications, such as in the automobile industry, and provide customers increased productivity and profitability.
Situated in Northern Italy, climate in Rovereto can vary from very cold to hot and humid. Deviations in the ambient temperature and humidity can affect the accuracy of Sandvik's advanced production machinery and therefore result in costly scrap of tools, so Sandvik pays special attention to the climate in the production area to ensure the highest quality tools are supplied to the customer.
To secure optimal operation of their sophisticated tool-making machinery, a strict control of indoor climate is enforced using an energy efficient Munters DryCool ERV system. The DryCool ERV supplies 12,000 cfm of outside air to the production facility at 71°F/45% RH, providing comfortable, dry conditions and energy recovery. During winter months the 70°F exhaust air is partially recovered and mixed with the outside air, raising inlet air temperature from 39°F to 57°F (78% heat recovery), saving costly energy for heating.
Munters accomplished it's primary goal at Sandvik to provide high quality air to the precision tool production facility. The superior energy efficiency of the DryCool ERV provided an exceptionally beneficial and economical solution.
In addition, with the DryCool ERV installed, Sandvik's original chiller capacity was reduced by 60% in the summer from 310kW to 123kW.
